SCSU SUPPlemental health and dental plan faq

​1. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ARE NOW COVERED BY THE SCSU PLAN AS OF SEPT. 1, 2022. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
​As of Sept. 1, 2022, international students are automatically covered by the SCSU Health & Dental Plan. Your new SCSU Plan includes health, dental, vision, and travel benefits, as well as access to additional coverage through Studentcare Network health practitioners. 
2. WHO IS THE SCSU PLAN INSURER?
​SCSU Plan health, dental, and vision benefits are insured by Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. Travel benefits are administered by Blue Cross Life Insurance Company of Canada. 
3. WHAT IS MY SCSU PLAN POLICY INFORMATION? 
​Your Group Numbers are: 50106 (for health, dental, and vision benefits with Sun Life) 97180 (for travel benefits with Blue Cross) Your Claiming ID is your student ID number. 
​4. WHAT’S COVERED?
The Plan includes the following benefits:
• Prescription drugs
• Health practitioners like physiotherapists, speech therapists, podiatrists, and chiropractors
• Eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses, and laser eye surgery
• Dental checkups, cleanings, fillings, and extractions
​• Travel coverage in case of a medical emergency and more!
5. HOW DO I ENROL MY FAMILY?
You can enrol your family (spouse and/or dependent children) each year by completing en enrolment process and by paying an additional fee, over and above your fee as a member of the Plan. Common law couples are eligible. All enrolments must be completed during the Change-of-Coverage Period. See www.studentcare.ca for instructions. 
6. I HAVE ALTERNATIVE COVERAGE. HOW AND WHEN CAN I OPT OUT?
If you do not wish to be covered by the Plan, a secure online opt-out processing system is available at the beginning of each term for newly enrolled students. The fall Change-of-Coverage Period is from Sept. 6 - Oct. 4, 2022. If you’re a new student starting in January, you can opt out online from Jan. 9 - 27, 2023. You can only opt out of the Health & Dental Plan upon showing proof of other equivalent health and dental coverage. 
7. WHAT IS VIRTUAL HEALTH CARE?
Students covered by the SCSU Health Plan also have access to virtual health care 24/7 through a mobile or web app, provided by Dialogue. With this service, you can consult doctors and nurses via the mobile app or on the web from anywhere in Canada. It provides: Medical care for common issues
• Certain conditions: nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, minor aches and pains, headaches, migraines, allergies
• Dermatology conditions: skin rashes, hives, or abrasions
• Minor emergencies: urinary tract infection, conjunctivitis, sinusitis
• Advice regarding minor injuries: cuts, bites, muscular or joint pains
• Sexual health: sexually transmitted infection (STI) information and screening Diverse care offerings to address your needs
• Fast access to medical professionals via chat, video, or phone
• Video consultations with licensed doctors and nurses
• Follow-up from the Dialogue team or referral to specialists

8. HOW CAN I CLAIM BENEFITS?
• Mail in claim forms for health and dental benefits, available at www.studentcare.ca.
• Download your Pay-Direct Card online and present it at the pharmacy for immediate processing of prescription drug claims.
• Call CanAssistance to find out how and when to submit claims if you use any of your travel benefits. See www.studentcare.ca for details.
​• You can also register online on Sun Life’s website at mysunlife.ca to check your claim’s status and to set up direct deposit for health and dental claims.
